Heritage & Conservation Iron Work

As active members of The Irish Artist Blacksmith Association (IABA) and The British Artist Blacksmith Association (BABA) we are more than qualified to take on any heritage project. We can conserve, replicate and in fact replace components of, for instance, railings of Listed Buildings, damaged or old gates for grand estates as well as new commissions again promoting the blacksmithing art.

We also hold events( forge-ins) to educate the general public as well as budding artisans to demonstrate exactly how blacksmithing should be done and often the bystanders are blown away by the amount of work & detail that goes into our projects.

Update December 2016. Ballinliss forge were lucky enough to be asked to refurbish some wrought iron Turrett Finials from Killyleagh Castle, Co. Down. Our contractors, Hugh J O'Boyle Downpatrick, had commissioned us to completely strip down, replace broken elements and fully restore and repaint to their former glory 3 stlyes of finials. this project required the use of historic iron, whihc has to be treated very differently to mild steel. We made the replacement pieces from old iron, fire welding segments together to get the required sizes of material before we could even begin forging the replacement elements. The finials were treated with a Zinc rich primer & paint to reduce corrosion. Here are the finished items.

Update August 2016

Further to an earlier update, we have recently completed several other phases of refurbishment work at the magnificent Powerscourt estate, Co. Wicklow. We were very priviledged to be asked to carry out the repair work on various locations throughout the grounds, and delighted with the outcome - as was the client. We worked along with Ruth Bothwell, who is a very talented painter and guild specialist. Ruth had the difficult task of re-guilding all the ironwork which was stripped back, and repainted, once it was repaired. Lucikly for us, most of the work was carried out by the grounds men at Powerscourt, and our specific set of skills were for repair and replicating Wrought Iron Elements. We are all kindly invited back for the relaunch of the heritage project, an event which we are really looking forward to.

Update April 2016.

We have recently just finished part of an ongoing commission all the way down in Powerscourt Hotel & Spa resort, Co. Wicklow. They are currently restoring some fo their magnifcent iron work pieces throughout their grounds. We are lucky to have been asked to make some replica parts and complete some on site restoration processes. These were all made from traiditonal wrought iron, forged by ourselves here at Ballinliss Forge.
